Contemporary design finds a sweet spot with buyers

November 7, 2017 by Andrew Nagel

Simple, clean lines, flat rooflines and large overhangs are popping up throughout metro Denver in neighborhoods old and new. The minimalistic style of contemporary architecture, devoid of decorative trim or elaborate ornamentation, is attracting home buyers at every price point. In the contemporary home, less is more—more artistic, more open and, according to its fans, more desirable.

Unlike Modern Design created in the 1920s – 1950s, contemporary design is of the moment. Current, timely and ever-changing. The qualities a buyer looks for in a contemporary home in 2017 are unique to this era: huge glass, asymmetrical shapes, soft, rounded lines, and open, fluid interiors. By definition, contemporary design feels cutting edge, forward thinking and innovative.

So what are the features that typify a contemporary home? Besides the clean lines and distinctive roofs, natural materials are a big draw. They give the exterior a balanced, harmonious nuance with nature. Inside the home, organic materials exude a relaxed, airy atmosphere in open spaces lit by soft natural light streaming through huge glass, and lots of it. Bare hardwood floors and a neutral palette create the backdrop for favorite accent pieces in vibrant, bold colors. The basics of line, shape and form are prominent in contemporary design, and signify the good taste and simplicity that attract people to its look and feel.

Contemporary lighting fixtures resemble works of fine art suspended above the dining table, as pendants above the island, or hanging overhead in soaring foyers. Hand railings and banisters feature innovative tension cables, glass or industrial materials. Wire screens extending from the railing to the floor act as a safety feature for young children and double as a design element. Innovation is key in the contemporary home; detailing is paramount. Contemporary design aims to strike a balance between details that get noticed yet are subtle enough not to detract from the minimalist, spacious ambience.

Electronics define the modern era. The home is the perfect place to incorporate smart, state-of-the-art technology for entertainment and work as well as home management and security. Gone are the days of multiple cords dangling behind televisions, desks and cabinets. Wireless and remote access, cleverly hidden in the contemporary environment, controls electronics, heating and cooling systems, sound and lighting systems, and home security.

Among the most appealing aspects of contemporary design is its encouragement to let go of strict and formal design rules in exchange for a new, more open, minimalistic attitude. Homeowners are encouraged to include pieces and colors they love while keeping the palette neutral. Of course the biggest criterion for any design sensibility is that it supports your lifestyle. Open floor plans that feature humongous islands and spacious, comfortable outdoor living areas are a magnet for the folks who love to entertain. For them, the contemporary home is truly a dream come true.

The architects and designers at Infinity Home Collection are pros in the exactness and the nuance of contemporary design. Infinity played a huge role in the creation of Solterra, and has since moved into other neighborhoods and communities in the metro area. Infinity is building a variety of two- and three-story homes that feature the distinguishing elements of contemporary design, and the subtle touches that give each home its unique character.
